A seaside town with different starting points
Hastings combines a working fishing beach, the Old Town and a town-centre shopping area with neighbourhoods stretching inland and towards St Leonards. A walk around the Stade feels different from an errand on Queens Road or a meal on Norman Road. Choose a starting point that fits the part of town you want to explore.
The directory includes Hastings and St Leonards, with nearby communities such as Fairlight, Guestling, Westfield, Battle and Bexhill. Those places retain their own identity, and several are in neighbouring Rother. A business keeps its actual base visible alongside the wider area it serves.
The Old Town and the fishing quarter
The Stade is a distinctive part of Hastings, with fishing boats drawn onto the beach and the Old Town streets close behind. The fishing quarter and its historic buildings offer a reason to pause rather than treating the seafront as a route straight through town.
Hastings Fishermen’s Museum provides an introduction to the local fishing story. Nearby High Street and George Street bring together independent shops, food stops and everyday services. Leave room for browsing if you are combining the museum with a visit to the Old Town.
Look inland as well as along the shore
Hastings Castle stands above the town on West Hill. Its ruined stonework gives the hillside a different character from the streets below. Check the attraction’s seasonal opening before planning a visit to the site itself.
Alexandra Park offers a green route inland, with water, mature trees and paths. It can provide a quieter contrast to the seafront. St Leonards has its own coastal streets and independent businesses, including food and shopping around Kings Road and Norman Road.
Find a useful local contact
Use the directory’s categories and area filters for shops, trades, garages, health services and community organisations. Fixed premises and mobile businesses have different arrangements, so check the address and website before travelling.
Hastings Borough Council provides local council information, while East Sussex County Council handles county services. What’s On covers selected upcoming dates, with organiser links for checking the latest programme and booking arrangements.
